Help with Vine Yoke Cardigan
[info]shoelaceswitch wrote in [info]novice_knitters
Hello all,

I was hoping for some help with the very beautiful Vine Yoke Cardigan by Ysolda Teague. This is my first attempt at a sweater and I've hit a bit of stumbling block.

The pattern is knit from side to side, beginning with the right front, then progressing to the right arm, around the back, etc. Each row consists of edging stitches, plain garter stitch, and yoke stitches. I'm at the end of the right front section and these are the instructions:

"Next(WS): Work in pattern until 1 st remain before yoke chart, w&t.
(w&t = Wrap and turn where you bring the working yarn to the front, slip the next stitch purlwise from the left to the right needle, bring the working yarn to the back, transfer the slipped stitch back to the left needle, turn work)
Next: Work in pattern to end.
Next: Work in pattern until 2 st remains before last wrapped stitch, w&t.
Repeat last 2 rows 4 times.
Next: Work in pattern to end.
Next: Work in pattern to wrapped stitch, turn without wrapping."

The next instructions are to work x number of rows on those 44 body stitches, which will then be put onto waste yarn while the yoke stitches are knit separately and they'll be rejoined later.

My problem is I have the wrong number of body stitches: I have 45. At first I had more but then realized that repeating those 2 rows 4 times did not mean 4 more rows, it meant 8, so yay for catching that mistake. However, I don't know why I have 45 body stitches, and I suspect it may have something to do with the last instruction in bold. If I were to knit that row like the others where you knit to the last stitch before the wrapped ones and w&t it, I think I would come up with 44 'unwrapped' stitches, instead of the 45 I have now. I'm pretty sure I haven't dropped or picked up any extra stitches along the way, so I don't know what the issue is.

Anybody knit this before? Anybody have weird stitch issues? Do we think being off by 1 stitch will be a major issue? Should I just knit 2 together? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I think I can see normal from here

Tomorrow, for the first time in almost two weeks, all of my kids will be at school simultaneously. This brings the joyous possibility of me having some time during which I am not doing 24/7 on call nursing/parenting duty. Except, I’ve already committed to chaperon for Gleek’s field trip. This means I’ll be helping shepherd excited third graders to a play rather than being at home reveling in the fact that no one needs me to fetch anything. But I can see it on the far side of tomorrow. I can see time when I have my house to myself. I can see when the morning routine is back to normal and the house is getting cleaned up and all the make-up homework is done.

Spaetzle!
[info]pandora_13 wrote in [info]super_supper
My boyfriend and I have been fairly obsessed with spaetzle ever since a recent trip to Virginia, where we had the good fortune of coming across a German restaurant that served a vegetarian spaetzle dish. This was further fueled by an episode of Lidia's Italy we saw on PBS this Sunday; Lidia prepared whole wheat spaetzle, and served it with beer-braised beef and gravy. This prompted me to find myself a recipe.

Here's a picture of the spaetzle on their own, so you can see the nifty little guys:

We smothered it in mushroom gravy, and MAN was it tasty.

my first sweater!
[info]solemnwarnings wrote in [info]novice_knitters
Hi fellow knitters!
I'm thinking about starting my first sweater. I'm trying to choose between two patterns, and I'd like some input on which one would be easier for a new-ish knitter. I can knit and purl, and I can knit on circulars and dpns. So I'm fairly confident, but if one of these two patterns is going to be really hard for me it would be nice to get a heads-up.
Here are the two choices:

Thank you so much for all your help!

I don’t get it. What does she do? What do you mean, she just sits in there all day? Can you tap the glass or something? She has an Artist’s Statement??? Because as far as I can tell, she’s neither an artist, nor does she make any kind of statement. You know what? Here’s my statement: You come to my house tomorrow and I’ll charge you $40 to watch me sit on the couch all day. How’s that?

Pachyderm Don’t Play that Way
[info]__cuteoverload

It happened so fast that he barely heard the massive snorf or felt the violent whoosh of air. But when he looked down, Paul realized that his entire forearm had been sucked up her trunk, and the look in her eyes said, “I don’t have to give it back, you know.” It was the first and last time Paul would play “I got your nose!” with Ellafante.

Oh honey, you best let go of that peanut if you want to keep your dignity.

That’s a risky little game, Christoph G.

chocolate wafer pie crust sub
[info]chez_margot wrote in [info]bakery
Hi all,

I plan to make grasshopper pie from scratch for a friend's bday. For the crust, instead of using the chocolate wafers, can I use chocolate graham crackers(which I already have) adding extra cocoa powder(which I already have) or something else to it? I'd rather use the chocolate grahams instead of buying chocolate wafers if I can do so without compromising the taste and texture.

What do you think?

Also, I've never made grasshopper pie before. I'm assuming it's pretty straight forward, but if there is anything I should know about (including, for example, the world's best recipe for it) please share your wisdom. :-)

The Benefit of Experience
[info]sandratayler

Fevers are more common for babies and toddlers than they are for older children. My kids used to have fevers all the time. I got to the point that I could tell how high a fever was just by putting my cheek against the child’s forehead. Often I used a thermometer just to verify, but I was right within a degree. I can’t do that anymore. It has been so long since fevers were a regular part of our existence. Although after the past couple of weeks I’m starting to regain my skill. Its a skill I’d just as soon stay rusty.

Today is Patch’s miserable day. He just lays on the couch and tries to get comfortable. This means he’ll still have a fever tonight and probably tomorrow. Then the cough will settle in but he’ll feel better. I’m expecting to keep him home from school all week. Patch benefits from my experience with the prior three kids having this same flu. I know what to expect and so I can tell him.

Patch is often the beneficiary of my experiences with the other kids. That just comes with the territory of being fourth. He benefits from the routines that I figured out when the other kids were his age. He doesn’t feel very scared about growing up because he’s watched older siblings tread the path before him. On the other hand, he always feels like he his being left behind, last one to the party. I know how he feels. I’m a fourth child too. Only I had three siblings following me as well, so I didn’t feel like I was trailing everyone.

There have been lots of studies done on birth order with lots of conflicting results. In my observation of my own kids, the older two have more pressure placed upon them to be responsible, but the younger two succeed at responsibility younger because the structure is in place to support it. The older two had more individualized adult attention at younger ages but the younger two had role models who spent time playing with them. I don’t know that any of them are better off for when they were born. They each have their own package of challenges. I do believe that our family as a whole improves the more experience we have in being one.
